There It Is
The ability to let the world hold what the world is already holding.
A surprising amount of effort is spent storing, modelling, reconstructing, simulating, remembering, calculating, or representing things that remain directly available.
Before carrying a duplicate, ask:
Is the thing itself still available?
If yes: There it is.

1. Observation
A surprising amount of effort is spent storing, modelling, reconstructing, simulating, remembering, calculating, or representing things that remain directly available.
Before carrying a duplicate, ask:
Is the thing itself still available?
If yes: There it is.
2. Method
Before storing, modelling, reconstructing, or calculating something:
- Determine whether the thing itself remains accessible.
- If it remains accessible, avoid creating an unnecessary duplicate.
- Use a pointer, index, relation, bookmark, location, query, or return path instead.
- Return when needed.
3. Relation to Other Instruments
There It Is → leave it outside.
Read Again → return when needed.
Together they form a simple architecture: leave what remains available where it is, and return to it when detail is needed.
4. Examples
The squirrel does not carry the forest.
The ant does not carry the map.
The engineer does not carry every formula.
The robot does not carry the household.
The reader does not carry the library.
The world continues to hold what it already contains.
5. Recognition
Compression is often not the removal of information.
Compression is recognizing that some information never needed to move inside in the first place.
The instrument does not deny the usefulness of models, memory, simulation, or representation. It asks a prior question: does this detail need to be carried at all?
If the source remains available, a pointer may be enough.
6. Grandma’s Version
Everybody else:
Build a model.
Create a representation.
Store a copy.
Simulate the world.

Toolbox Note
There It Is is a companion instrument to Read Again and The Library Is Outside. It helps distinguish between information that must be carried and information that can remain where it already is. The instrument refuses unnecessary representation.
The instrument almost disappears because it has become so small.
