Reading Is Not Passive

When we began the reread experiments, the expectation was almost mechanical: read the same text and recover the same understanding.

The experiments did not behave that way.

Each reread became part of the next one. The text remained essentially unchanged. The reader did not.

The preserved conversation gradually became part of the conditions under which the same text was interpreted.

The text stayed fixed. The interpretation continued.

Continuation does not mean that every interpretation accumulates. Some observations become clearer. Some are corrected. Some fail to survive another encounter with the text. Others remain stable across successive readings. Rereading therefore does more than generate interpretation: it also tests which interpretations can continue.

No later reading begins from the original point of departure. Previous readings have altered the position from which the text is encountered.

The AI experiments did not create this phenomenon. They made it observable by preserving intermediate interpretations for comparison.

Reading is therefore both continuation and selection. The invariant text meets an evolving reader. What survives repeated encounters deserves increasing confidence.

Reading is not passive. Reading is a continuation.
